The Rosenwald School in Acworth is a reminder that a school building can represent far more than its classrooms. The city’s history describes a 1924 school created through a national partnership associated with Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington, together with substantial local investment.
Acworth’s Black community contributed $700 toward construction, matched by Rosenwald, while the Cobb County Board of Education supplied another $1,850. Those amounts make the community’s own role visible in a story sometimes told mainly through the names of national benefactors.

The building’s later life was complicated. The city says it was slated for demolition in 1948, then rebuilt on Cherokee Street in 1953 with alterations. It now stands in Doyal Hill Park and continues as a community center. The city reports a major renovation completed in 2023.
A visit to the area is an opportunity to read the school alongside nearby Black community landmarks, including Bethel A.M.E. and Zion Hill Baptist churches. Use the city’s history as a starting point, respect active community and worship spaces, and confirm interior access rather than assuming every historic building operates as a walk-in museum.
